Postdoctoral position, Medieval Pathogen Palaeogenomics

The Section for Evolutionary Genomics is looking for a skilled scientist to fill a ca 3-year position (38 months), as part of a recently funded project that will investigate the history of human pathogens in the city of Trondheim, Norway. This project is funded by the Carlsberg Foundation as part of a larger grant to study the genetic history of northern Europe, using genomic DNA extracted and sequenced from skeletal samples. This postdoctoral position will be tasked with mining the generated shotgun genomic DNA for pathogen sequences, with the aim of recovering complete ancient pathogen genomes. Recovered genomes will then be analysed in the broader evolutionary context to provide enhanced insights into questions such as: which pathogens were present at what times, and how do they relate to other ancient and modern pathogen diversity. Therefore, critical skills required include: prior experience in the extraction of ancient DNA and generation of sequencing libraries on said DNA, as well as the application of target enrichment methodologies such as hybridization capture. Additionally, the candidate will be expected to have a very sound background in the computational approaches linked to analysing such ancient data, as well as prior familiarity with human pathogen genetics and biology. The position would be supervised by Prof. Tom Gilbert.

Main tasks

  • Computationally screen shotgun palaeogenomic data to identify pathogens
  • Where needed generate extra data to supplement findings, including through the use of target-capture enrichment
  • Analyse recovered data in the broader historical and phylogenetic / evolutionary genomic context
  • Prepare manuscripts for publication
Mandatory Qualifications
  • Relevant scientific background – at least PhD level with thesis or prior postdoc working on ancient DNA
  • Prior experience in the extraction of nucleic acids from historic/ancient samples including bone and tooth samples
  • Prior experience in the generation of Illumina based shotgun sequencing libraries on ancient DNA
  • Prior experience using computational metagenomic methods to analyse such data
  • Highly organized, and able to work both as part of a team but also under their own initiative.
  • Excellent teamwork and communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Fluency in English (written, reading, spoken)
  • Have a good publication record, with at least one first-author publication
Other Qualifications of Considerable Interest
  • Knowledge of the history of Northern Europe over the past millennium, in the context of humans and their pathogens.
  • Knowledge of a Scandinavian language

Terms of employment
The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff.
Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.
The starting salary is currently up to DKK 430.569 including annual supplement (+ pension up to DKK 73.627). Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.
