Postdoctoral position in neuroimaging of synaesthesia and expertise

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral researcher to join a neuroimaging project on the relationship between synaesthesia and expertise located at Center of Functionally Integrative Neuroscience (CFIN) Aarhus University and coordinated by Centre for Cognitive Neuroscience (CCN) at Aalborg University.
The current call is part of a larger project funded by The Danish Council for Independent Research (www.ufm.dk/en/research-and-innovation/funding-programmes-for-research-and-innovation/who-has-received-funding/2016/dff-research-project-grants-from-the-danish-council-for-independent-research-humanities-june-2016) led by PI associate professor Thomas Alrik Sørensen (TAS). The postdoc will have his or her principle placement at the scanning facility at CFIN where the position is administered from, but in addition they will also carry an affiliation with CCN in Aalborg University.

The position is advertised for a duration of 2 years and eligible candidates are expected to start July 1st 2019 or as soon as possible.

Project
The overall aim of the research project is to investigate similarities between development of synaesthesia and mechanisms involved in learning and expertise. The project includes behavioural investigations as well of MR investigations of structural and functional modulations in development of expertise as well as in synaesthesia. The postdoctoral candidate is expected to 1) develop behavioural and neuroimaging protocols, 2) execute large scale data collection including recruiting, screening, and testing project participants, 3) modelling and analysing MR as well as behavioural data, 4) managing and training of volunteer assistants, and 5) take part in ongoing discussions on possible project extensions. As such the ideal candidate will have substantial prior experience in all of these areas. In addition, it is important that the candidate can see themselves both working independently on the project, as well as being part of a team under the guidance of TAS.

Research Environment
CFIN is an international and strongly multidisciplinary research centre at Aarhus University Hospital located at the department for clinical medicine. CFIN has a state-of-the-art neuroscience facility including a 306 channel TRIUX MEG system (Elekta Neuromag), MRI systems (Siemens TimTrio 3T, magnetom Skyra 3T), PET, TMS, EEG, eye-tracking, olfactometer, and more. CCN is a young research group in Aalborg with strong behavioural testing facilities, including EEG (Brain Products), Eye-tracking (Eye-link 1000), and currently establishing support for olfactory manipulations. In addition, we have strong collaborations nationally which allow us access to a 7T MR system as well as different animal facilities.

Required Qualifications
Appointment to a post-doctoral position requires academic qualifications at the PhD level in a relevant research topic like cognitive neuroscience or psychology. In addition, the following skills will be highly relevant and prior expertise will be strongly favoured:

  1. Working and analysing MR data, both structurally and functionally.
  2. Computational modelling
  3. Relevant background in experimental investigations of synaesthesia and/or development of learning and expertise.
  4. Knowledge of multisensory perception.
  5. Expertise with additional methods like EEG, Eye-tracking, etc.
  6. A strong background and high degree of familiarity with programming and analysis tools like MatLab, R, Phyton, etc.
  7. A strong track record of scientific publications in international peer reviewed journals.

As the candidate is also expected to coordinate and be involved in other collaborative projects, excellent interpersonal skills and an interest in facilitating a collaborative research environment is an equally important aspect.
