Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences, Faculty of Science at University of Copenhagen is offering a 2-year Postdoc position in improving crop photosynthesis using precision breeding/CRISPR Cas9 commencing 1 September 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Description of the scientific environment
The Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences (PLEN) strives to stimulate fundamental research and the synergy between basic and applied research in biology and environmental science. The focus is on plants, microorganisms, animals and the environment as a basis for sustainable production of food and other biological products. Research and teaching cover natural resources, agriculture, biotechnology and synthetic biology from the molecular level to the ecosystem scale.

Project description
The research project is on using new plant breeding technologies (NBT) for the main crops of commercial interest. NBT are precision mutagenesis technologies, with the potential of becoming the most revolutionizing breeding tool of the last decades. In the development of NBT, the focus will be on the species and genotypes most relevant to the breeding companies and on traits of outmost importance for the industrial partners incl. photosynthesis.

The successful postdoc candidate will optimize PAM-Fluorometry and Gas exchange-based workflows for crop species relevant to the project (i.e. wheat, barley, alfalfa and ryegrass). Within the consortium the candidate will contribute to improving regeneration procedures and genome editing strategies. Part of the work will be in direct cooperation with breeding companies involved in commercial breeding of these crop species.

Qualification requirements
Successful candidates will have an excellent track record documented and will be highly motivated. An important criteria will be enthusiasm for the research area.

Additionally a qualified applicant must have:

  • A PhD degree in plant physiology with focus on photosynthesis, molecular biology, crop breeding or any other project relevant field
  • Documented scientific research experience in:
    • Biophysical methods related to photosynthesis research (e.g. PAM-Fluorometry, Gas-exchange measurements)
    • Advanced knowledge in CRISPR/Cas9 or related gene editing technologies
    • Expertise in mutant screens
    • Expertise in plant tissue culture will be considered an advantage
  • Good organizational skills and a detail-oriented structured work approach
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills/ ability to build good working relations
  • Excellent written and spoken English.

Terms of employment
The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff.

Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.

The starting salary is currently up to DKK 430.569 including annual supplement (+ pension up to DKK 73.627). Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.
