We are looking for a highly motivated and dynamic researcher for a 3-year postdoc position that is to commence 1 May 2019.

The main focus of your work will be analyses of metabolic phenotypes in population-based and disease-oriented genetic data with a special emphasis on the isolated Greenlandic population.

The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research (CBMR) was established in 2010 to conduct fundamental research on metabolism. It is part of the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen. The Center has around 200 employees from all over the world. Our group and research
The research group of Associate Professor Niels Grarup investigates the genetic architecture of type 2 diabetes and metabolic traits to expand our insights into pathogenesis of metabolic disease. Our focus area is to define the genetic determinants of diabetes-related phenotypes. Other focus areas include the application of recall-by-genotype principles to investigate the physiological impact on genetic variation related to metabolism and the genetic determinants of food preferences. In addition, we participate in a number of genetic consortia in international collaborative studies on obesity, type 2 diabetes and related traits applying genome-wide association or other up-to-date genetic-epidemiological methods. One major focus area is genetic research in the isolated Greenlandic population, which due to its special genetic constitution is a source of interesting genomics findings. The overall vision of the research is to arrive at advances in clinical management and prevention of diabetes and obesity.

The research group is embedded in a highly international and interdisciplinary environment including medical doctors, bioinformaticians and molecular biologists.

Your job
You will be centrally involved in the analyses of genetic data from large population samples coming from the Greenlandic population. A special focus will be on the influence of putative loss-of-function variation on metabolic diseases such as type 2 diabetes and obesity as well as related quantitative phenotypes for which you will be responsible. You are expected to participate in and lead existing projects, and are highly encouraged to initiate new cutting-edge research projects. You are expected to interact and collaborate with other medical researchers, biologists, and bioinformaticians in the center as well as in international project consortia.

We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic scientist with the following competencies and experience:

Essential criteria

  • PhD in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Physiology, Biology, Biochemistry or related field
  • Experience in applying statistical and mathematical methods to biological problems
  • Experience in R programming languages
  • Experience in genome-wide genotype and/or next generation sequencing data
  • Basic understanding of human disease biology and physiology
  • Demonstrated capacity for coordinating and supporting effective team work
  • Proven track record showing continuous scientific productivity in peer reviewed journals
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in collecting and processing large-scale scientific data including experience with the Linux/UNIX environment, command lines, shell scripting and high-performance computing
  • Experience in experimental design and planning of experiments
  • Experience in analysing human genetics data (NGS and/or GWAS) in relation to quantitative and/or disease traits
  • Experience in handling multi-omics data, including genomics, transcriptomics and other omics data

The place of employment is at Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research, Maersk Tower, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences at University of Copenhagen. Terms of employment
The employment as Postdoc is a full time and fixed-term position for 3 years. Starting date is 1 May 2019 or after agreement.

Salary, pension and terms of employment will be in accordance with the agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations). The position is covered by the “Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff at the Universities” of June 28, 2013.

Non-Danish and Danish applicants may be eligible for tax reductions, if they hold a PhD degree and have not lived in Denmark the past 10 years.
