Associate Professor or Assistant Professor (tenure track) within single-particle cryo-electron microscopy and cryo-electron tomography

Applications are invited for a position as an Associate Professor or an Assistant Professor (tenure track) at the Interdisciplinary Nanoscience Center, Aarhus University, Denmark ( The intended start date for this appointment is 1 July 2019.

The position is available within key applications of cryo-electron microscopy in structural biology and bionanotechnology.

The ideal candidate has expertise in the application and critical validation of transmission electron microscopy, can demonstrate significant experience with single-particle cryo-EM, and/or cryo-electron tomography, and based on a deep understanding and record of applications ranging from microscope operations, sample presentation and data acquisition to 3D reconstruction, structure determination and validation.

Aarhus University has a fully operational Titan-Krios EM facility with a Gatan Quantum K2 detector and powerful computing and data storage facilities ( ). Further upgrades, including a new 200 or 300 kV cryo-electron microscope for biological samples, are financed through a Danish national research infrastructure program, EMBION, and will be launched in 2019. The facility is supported by a scientific facility manager, a high-performance computing scientist dedicated to cryo-EM and structural biology, an electron microscope service engineer, and technical staff. Besides own research, the successful candidate is expected to gradually engage in local collaborations and to take part in further development of a thriving research community at Aarhus University using cryo-EM in structural biology, bionanotechnology, molecular cell biology and molecular medicine. Industry collaborations are also encouraged and well-supported through governance structures and financial instruments.

The candidate’s research plan must outline original research ideas and topics, and it should preferably complement other activities at the Interdisciplinary Nanoscience Center and Aarhus University.

The candidate is expected to build an independent research group and conduct an active program of internationally recognized research. Ideas and strategies for future integration and development of cryo-EM research at Aarhus University in local, national, regional and international context is considered an advantage.

The successful candidate must be able to teach undergraduate- and graduate-level courses within the general fields of biophysics and biochemistry, and specifically electron microscopy. Candidates who do not speak Danish are expected to be able to teach in Danish on undergraduate courses within a 3-5-year timeframe.

Further expectations for the two levels of appointment are:

  • Assistant Professor (tenure track):
    Candidates must demonstrate potential for excellent research and teaching. Extensive postdoctoral training or similar is expected (see below for tenure-track program).
  • Associate Professor:
    Candidates must have an excellent record of independent research accomplishments, scholarly achievement and teaching experience. An established record of external funding is essential, as well as concomitant strong evidence of emerging leadership in their field.

The final tenure review is conducted after five and a half years. If the review is positive, the candidate will be offered a tenured position as Associate Professor/Senior Researcher at Aarhus University.

Application procedure
Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the assessment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. The selection is made on the basis of an assessment of who of the candidates are most relevant considering the requirements of the advertisement. All applicants will be notified within 6 weeks whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee and will receive his/her assessment. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants, including the main considerations emphasized during the selection process.

Science and Technology refers to the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Danish Universities under the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation. (

Salary depends on seniority as agreed between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Confederation of Professional Associations.
