Three-year postdoc position in studies on relationship between participants in the livestock production chain and interactions between humans and animals

At the Department of Animal Science, Aarhus University a postdoc position is available starting June 1 2019.

We seek a candidate with a background in anthropology or social science and with insight into animal husbandry and animal health and welfare. The preferred candidate has experience in conducting and analysing qualitative data and research method applied in human and/or social science. The research focus on interactions between humans and livestock. Main research areas is the importance of herd management and studies of farmers and employees in relation to animal welfare and prudent use of antibiotics. Research further includes development and application of methods for communication and learning about animal welfare assessment and animal welfare and health control in livestock herds. The assignments include teaching on communication at many levels and supervision of students. The chosen candidate is expected to join and develop ongoing research within the research group in Epidemiology and Management. Collaboration with farmers, farm industry, veterinarians and animal welfare authorities is part of the assignment.


  • Academic qualifications at PhD level in anthropology or related field
  • Documentation of excellent skills within the research area
  • Good skills in communication of research results internationally as evidenced by publications in peer-reviewed journals and books
  • Experience in supervising students and teaching at a high academic level will also be a merit

Place of Work and area of Employment
The place of work is Blichers Allé 20, DK-8830 Tjele, and the area of employment is Aarhus University with related departments. Teaching activities are primarily conducted at AU-Campus, 8000 Aarhus.

Application procedure
Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the appointment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. All applicants will be notified whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee, and each applicant is given the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment that concerns him/her self. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants, including the main considerations emphasized during the selection process.

Salary depends on seniority as agreed between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Confederation of Professional Associations.
