Laboratory Engineer for DTU Structural Lab

Danmarks Tekniske Universitet

DTU Structural Lab, one of three laboratory units under CASMaT, is looking for a skilled laboratory engineer for mechanical testing of materials, components and structures. We need a new colleague who has considerable hands-on experience within the field of experimental mechanics, and one who also can act as project responsible for a multitude of commercial testing projects, carried out by DTU Structural Lab as testing services for industry partners.

DTU Structural Lab is a jointly run laboratory unit by DTU, Department of Mechanical Engineering and DTU, Department of Civil Engineering, and therefore carries out testing related to both the mechanical and civil engineering disciplines within experimental mechanical testing of construction materials and components as well as full-size structures. The laboratory is among the largest and most advanced of its kind in Northern Europe and consist of a large variation of hydraulic testing machines and actuators as well as large strong floors and walls for structural testing.

The job

You will report directly to the laboratory manager and work as a part of a dynamic technical team across both departments, which both consists of other laboratory engineers as well as technicians. The team forms the core technical staff serving and operating the laboratory.

The following areas of responsibility are included in the position:

  • Assist the lab manager with the daily operation of the lab.
  • Leading, administrating and carrying out commercial testing projects for the industry as part of the testing services offered by the laboratory.
  • Participating in research projects and carrying out mechanical testing activities.
  • Providing new users, incl. students training on test equipment operation and basic techniques.
  • Developing new test methods, techniques and setups in close cooperation with the scientific staff in the associated sections at the two departments.
  • Ensuring a high level of quality in testing, both with regard to maintenance of calibration schedules, efficiency and accuracy of test procedures and specimen handling, as well as organizing and maintaining a large stock of different types of specialized test fixtures, rigs and associated measurement equipment.

Our expectations of you

The successful applicant must hold an engineering degree, and demonstrate a proven background within operation of mechanical testing equipment, specifically servo-hydraulic testing machines and actuators operated by digital controller systems and software from MTS and/or Instron.

Preferably the applicant must have experience both within materials testing and characterization in tension testing machines, as well as structural multi-axial structural testing on strong floors/walls. The applicant must also be able to demonstrate a solid understanding of both solid and structural mechanics for both static, fatigue and dynamic testing within mechanical and/or civil engineering.

The applicant must be able to work independently, but also poses strong qualifications within team work, flexibility and communication, and be able to keep an overview and focus on the most efficient task completion, when many on-going projects are being carried out at the same time in the laboratory.

What we offer in return

We offer an interesting and challenging job in an international atmosphere with the focus on research, teaching, innovation and scientific advice for the benefit of the surrounding community. We place emphasis on a high level of professionalism among our staff, so skills development is an integral part of our organization. We offer a great flexibility in the position. In the area of technical and natural sciences, DTU is one of the leading research and education institutions in Europe.

Salary and appointment terms

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.

The workplace is DTU Lyngby Campus and the employment will be at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, in the Section of Solid Mechanics.
