The Department of Communication and Arts (DCA), Roskilde University, invites applications for a position as Professor of Media and Culture from 1 December 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The Department of Communication and Arts is an innovative and interdisciplinary university environment, characterised by diversity with respect to theory, method and area of study in research and education. The department produces knowledge that contributes to critical research and reflexive practice in relation to development and change in society, including public institutions, private organizations, NGOs, and cultural and media institutions. In Communication Studies, research and teaching cover a plurality of theoretical traditions (for example, sociocultural, critical, rhetorical, phenomenological and pragmatic traditions) and empirical areas of study (for example, dialogic and participatory, digital, intercultural, organizational, political, science, strategic and visual communication).

For this position, we invite outstanding candidates with demonstrated research excellence and a proven commitment to developing and applying critical ways to theorise and empirically research the role of media in different cultural contexts. We are particularly interested in research focusing on newer information and communication technologies and their intertwinement with cultural practices related to gender and race.

Responsibilities and tasks
The professor’s main tasks are to undertake research and research-based teaching within Media and Culture.

The ideal candidate is expected to

  • maintain an outstanding record of publication,
  • make a substantial contribution to the development of Media and Culture as a field of research and study programme at Roskilde University,
  • carry out research and research-based teaching and supervision within Media and Culture,
  • build up, lead and nurture a dynamic research culture within a research group in the department,
  • apply for external research funding,
  • participate actively in everyday, collegial activities in the department,
  • participate actively in national and international research networks,
  • teach, supervise and assess students at Bachelor and Masters levels as well as PhD students,
  • support and guide postdoctoral researchers and assistant professors,
  • take part in academic assessment,
  • engage in the dissemination and sharing of knowledge with the rest of society, including through participation in public debate.

Applicants must hold a PhD degree, and/or have documented scientific qualifications as an associate professor equivalent, within Communication Studies, Cultural Studies and/or Media Studies. In addition, the applicant is expected to have
  • advanced level pedagogical competence
  • experience in research management and editorial work
  • ties to, and to be an active part of, international research networks and collaboration
  • experience in undertaking academic administrative responsibilities at a university level
  • experience in the supervision of students at all university levels and junior researchers

The ideal candidate shall be enterprising and possess good communication skills and be a visible, involved participant in the department’s daily activities, in addition to being willing to engage in disciplinary and interdisciplinary collaboration across the department.

In the assessment of the candidates consideration will be given to;
  • a proven record of outstanding research published in leading journals and/or leading book publishers at an international level within Media and Culture,
  • a proven record with respect to applying for and securing external research funding,
  • a proven record with respect to research dissemination and knowledge-sharing,
  • experience with respect to dynamic leadership in research and education,
  • experience with respect to teaching and education at undergraduate and postgraduate levels,
  • experience with respect to collaboration with organisations in relation to research and education,
  • experience with respect to participation in national and international networks of researchers,
  • a willingness to participate in the activities of the department as an active and engaged colleague.

Terms of employment
The employment is on full time, 37 hours per week and you will refer to Head of Department Hanne Løngreen.

The position will be filled according to the Agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC) and Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities.

Commencing salary will be minimum DKK 621.105,04 per year (1st april 2018 level) plus pension contribution (17,1 %).

After the deadline for applications the Head of Department will shortlist applicants for assessment with assistance from the recruitment committee including the chairperson of the assessment committee.Shortly after the application deadline all applicants will be notified whether or not their application has been selected for assessment.The shortlisted applicants will be informed about the composition of the assessment committee, and each applicant will be given the opportunity to comment on the composition of the committee and - later on - their assessment.Once the recruitment process is completed, all applicants will be informed of the outcome of their application.
