Researcher in Corrosion in Oil and Gas

DTU, Department of Mechanical Engineering, the Materials and Surface Engineering section are seeking candidates for a researcher position in the field of Corrosion in the Oil and Gas Industry. The researcher position is a permanent position starting from 1 August 2019.

Corrosion in the oil and gas industry is a serious issue that results in decreased production and high operational costs. Corrosion behavior of production pipes depend on many operational parameters (e.g. CO2, H2S, pressure, temperature, interventions) and material variables (e.g. microstructure, chemical composition). Consequently, due to complex environment and synergistic effects, more than one mechanism is likely to be responsible for enhanced corrosion degradation and ultimate failure of the pipes.

Responsibilities and tasks

Research activities in the intended researcher position will focus on the following issues:

  • Defining governing parameters controlling corrosion processes in the pipes
  • Understanding corrosion mechanisms observed in the oil and gas production
  • Developing efficient mitigation techniques to minimize/hinder corrosion of the pipes
  • Developing reliable monitoring techniques
  • Developing laboratory techniques to analyze corrosion behavior of steels under simulated oil and gas conditions

The selected candidate is expected to work closely with and supervise other researchers working on the corrosion in oil and gas. High interdisciplinary collaboration with the industry and other relevant research groups is expected. Work involves high level of co-ordination of projects, supervision of activities, idea generation and initiation of projects. Some travel can be expected.


Candidates for the position should have a PhD degree in Materials, Corrosion, and Surface Engineering area with prior experience on oil & gas related corrosion research. Prior oil & gas related industrial experience and experience in involving and managing oil and gas research projects with experience on materials and corrosion issues in the oil and gas processes is preferable.

It is an advantage, if the candidate has a knowledge of various corrosion mechanisms and mitigation procedures etc. expected to be seen in oil and gas production. It is expected that the candidates have good communication skills, can pro-actively engage and manage research group including PhD students and other relevant stakeholders in the on ongoing and new projects.

Salary and terms of employment

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.

The position as a researcher is a permanent entry-level position. After a maximum of 4 years, a researcher can be promoted to a senior researcher position after assessment. More information can be found here: Career paths at DTU.
