Department of Engineering at Aarhus University, Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) section, opens a 4-year position as researcher within the scientific area of combining methods and technologies from electrical and computing engineering with the biological, environmental and agricultural domain.

The intended starting date is August 1st 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Development of technologies, improved methods, sensing, data processing and interpretation, followed by knowledge management and intelligent operations, robotics and precision agriculture/precision livestock farming are expanding areas with high attention from industry, authorities and the general public. The department of engineering is nationally as well as internationally involved in these research topics, and seeks to expand the research activity as well as the associated public advisory service.

The applicant will be responsible for public advisory service to the Danish authorities as well as initiating research projects to support the continued knowledge build up within these fields. The successful applicant is expected also to document experience with research and ability to attract external funding.

The selected candidate must have proven scientific competences within automation and robotics, data processing and interpretation, within the agricultural domain. The candidate must also have some documented experience with public advisory service to authorities. A track record of relevant reports, publications and scientific publications, and advisory service disseminations must be demonstrated.

The ideal candidate must have the following competences:

  • Experience with public advisory work in Denmark (able to read and write Danish)
  • Basic research in agricultural engineering for an information-based precision crop production
  • Identification of agronomic-technical research issues
  • Design of measures and processes for an information-based, precision crop production
  • Conception of technical solutions for respective systems
  • Development of sensor solutions and calibration models for the collection of crop parameters
  • Experimental design and test realisation in the laboratory and in the field

In addition, the candidate must have competences within several of the following areas:
  • Knowledge on electronics / information and communication technologies which comprises data acquisition and data conversion and structuring of information as the basis for machine learning targeting crop fitness, safety, and/or detection of living entities.
  • Scientific experience with automation of prescribed actions for agricultural equipment solutions, which comprises integration of mechanical engineering, electronic engineering and computer/software engineering and advancing of the embedded intelligence.
  • Experience with acquisition of information from biological systems, indicating the status of essential parameters, and the transmission of data to a data processing unit or information management system.
  • Experience on organisation of large scale field trials, test methodologies of agricultural machinery, use of geographical information systems (GIS), experiences with communication protocol standards, i.e. embedded as well as web services.
  • Experience with co-leading research and R&D projects

The candidate must hold an approved Ph.D. degree within Electrical/Computer engineering or similar, and have documented experience within the fields above. Applicants with experience with industrial collaboration are preferred.
