Applications are invited for a position as an Associate Professor or an Assistant Professor (tenure track) at the Interdisciplinary Nanoscience Center, Aarhus University, Denmark ( The intended start date for this appointment is 1 July 2019.

The position is available within application of transmission electron microscopy to materials science research.

The ideal candidate has expertise in the application of transmission electron microscopy within the broad field of materials science. The candidate’s research plan must contain research visions and topics defined within materials science. It is furthermore expected that the successful candidate will be able to enter into collaborative research projects with the extensive materials science activities at the Interdisciplinary Nanoscience Center and other departments at Aarhus University, contribute to the continuous development of electron microscopy infrastructure, and be a valuable collaboration partner within industry-driven research and development.

The candidate is expected to build an independent research group and conduct an active program of internationally recognized research.

iNANO has a suite of 7 electron microscopes: 4 transmission electron microscopes (TEM) including a FEI Talos and a FEI Titan TEM equipped with a direct electron detector, 3 scanning electron microscopes (SEM), one of which is a dual beam (SEM combined with FIB) . Furthermore, several preparation techniques are available to provide the best quality of sample for microscopy investigations. The technical TEM maintenance is supported by a research technician. The successful candidate must be able to teach at all levels of university education and be an integral part in the teaching program. Furthermore, the candidate is expected to be able to educate students and young researchers within theory and practical application of electron microscopy. Candidates who do not speak Danish are expected to be able to teach in Danish on undergraduate courses within a 3-5-year timeframe.

The new faculty member will also be associated with the recently established Center for Integrated Materials Research (iMAT), which is a strategic initiative at the Faculty of Science and Technology at Aarhus University ( iMAT integrates a diverse range of basic and applied materials research areas across departments and centers and thereby strongly contributes to solving some of the Grand Challenges of modern society. iMAT is administratively placed under iNANO (, which is a major research and education center based at Aarhus University possessing state-of-the-art infrastructure across disciplines. Both iNANO and iMAT offer a dynamic research environment with many industrial, national and international collaborators.

Further expectations for the two levels of appointment are:

  • Assistant Professor (tenure track):
    Candidates must demonstrate potential for excellent research and teaching. Extensive postdoctoral training or similar is expected (see below for tenure-track program).
  • Associate Professor:
    Candidates must have an excellent record of independent research accomplishments, scholarly achievement and teaching experience. An established record of external funding is essential, as well as concomitant strong evidence of emerging leadership in their field.

As part of the Aarhus University Tenure Track Programme, the University carries out a mid-way evaluation to review the progress of the tenure track candidate after three years, according to the same criteria used in the final tenure review. The final tenure review is conducted after five and a half years. If the review is positive, the candidate will be offered a tenured position as Associate Professor/Senior Researcher at Aarhus University.

Application procedure
Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the assessment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. The selection is made on the basis of an assessment of who of the candidates are most relevant considering the requirements of the advertisement. All applicants will be notified within 6 weeks whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee and will receive his/her assessment. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants, including the main considerations emphasized during the selection process.

Formalities and salary range
Science and Technology refers to the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Danish Universities under the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation. (

Salary depends on seniority as agreed between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Confederation of Professional Associations.
