Department of Communication and Arts, Roskilde University, invites applications for a position as professor of Ethics with a particular focus on criminal justice ethics and bioethics from 1 December 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The Department of Communication and Arts is an innovative and interdisciplinary university environment, characterised by diversity with respect to theory, method and area of study in research and education. The department produces knowledge that contributes to critical research and reflexive practice in relation to development and change in society, including public institutions, private organizations, NGOs, and cultural and media institutions.
The Section of Philosophy and Science Studies at the department has for a long time had a strong position in applied ethics. In particular, research at the section has over the last 10-15 years had a focus on criminal justice ethics and bioethics. Criminal justice ethics covers ethical challenges that arise in relation to police work, the work of criminal courts, and the sentencing system. The research group Research Group of Criminal Justice Ethics has published comprehensively on various ethical questions concerning theory of criminalization and penal theory. Moreover, it has been engaged in research at the intersection of criminal justice ethics and other fields such as neuroethics. Furthermore, research at the section has also been devoted to systematic studies in bioethics, such as the challenges that arise in relation to the used of modern reproduction technology.

Responsibilities and tasks
The professor’s main tasks is to undertake research and research-based teaching within the field of research.

The professor is expected to maintain a significant record of publications, to inspire research achievement and to build a research culture within the research group. You will also be expected to secure external research funding, and engage in research networks. You will be required to teach, supervise and assess students at BA and MA levels as well as PhD students. This also implies developing the field in relation to teaching. As professor you will be required to participate in post-doctoral training and be responsible for the supervision of assistant professors as well as take part in academic assessments. The position also requires share of knowledge with the rest of society – including participation in public debate.

Finally, you will be expected to contribute to management and leadership through engagement in the Department.

The ideal candidate is expected to

  • Undertake research in criminal justice ethics and bioethics
  • Contribute to the work of the Research Group of Criminal Justice Ethics by organizing seminars, conferences, etc.
  • Provide funding for future research projects in these fields.
  • Undertake teaching in ethics and political philosophy and supervision within the philosophy programme and the bachelor programme in the Humanities.

Qualifications
Applicants must hold a PhD degree or equivalent within Justice ethics and bioethics. Qualifications within all the following scientific areas are required.
Documented scientific qualifications such as a professor equivalent in relation to the above-mentioned subject area(s).
  • Research at an international level within criminal justice ethics and bioethics.
  • Documented preparation of grant proposal for external funding of research projects.
  • Experience with education in relation to projects, multidisciplinary work, etc.

The ideal candidate shall be enterprising and possess good communication skills and be a visible, involved participant in the department’s daily activities, in addition to being willing to engage in disciplinary and interdisciplinary collaboration across the department.

Assessment

In the assessment of the candidates consideration will be given to;
  • original scientific production at an international level in relation to the above-mentioned field(s)
  • development of the field
  • experience with providing adaptive leadership in the development of research and teaching,
  • the ability to promote and utilize research results,
  • experience in teaching and education,
  • ability to contribute to development of the department’s internal and external cooperation,
  • proven experience in securing external research funding.

Terms of employment
The employment is on full time, 37 hours per week and you will refer to Head of Department Hanne Løngreen.

The position will be filled according to the Agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC) and Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities.

Commencing salary will be minimum DKK 621.105,04 per year (1st april 2018 level) plus pension contribution (17,1 %).
