Postdoc in Population Dynamics of Eel and Dynamics of Cormorant Predation



A two-year postdoc position in population dynamics of eel and cormorant-prey dynamics is available at the Technical University of Denmark, National Institute of Aquatic Resources (DTU Aqua), starting June 15st. 2019.

The position is based at the section for Freshwater Fisheries and Ecology, situated in Silkeborg, Denmark. The Section has 25 employees and focuses on migratory behaviour of freshwater fish, predator/prey relationships and regeneration of natural fish stock and their management and offers an internationally recognised and highly dynamic scientific environment. The candidate will work both independently and in close cooperation with the staff at the institute. Main field of research will be population dynamics of European eel and dynamics of cormorant predation.

Responsibilities and tasks

The candidate will primarily work on projects studying population dynamics of European eel and dynamics of cormorant predation supporting the existing management of the species.

Central parts of the work will be development of dynamic models describing population development of the eel population and dynamics of cormorant predation.

Development of new research projects in collaboration with colleagues at the sections and/or international partners as well as publication of papers in peer reviewed scientific journals is expected.


The successful candidate should have a strong ecological background, preferably with experience in aquatic ecology. Besides strong ecological knowledge in these areas, the candidate should be proficient and experienced in numerical ecological models, including dynamic population models, and species interaction models. Experience in spatial modelling and agent-based models is a big advantage, as is experience with High Performance Computing (HPC).


  • PhD in a relevant field, e.g. population dynamics or ecological modelling.
  • Experience in dynamical mechanistic modelling of population dynamics.
  • Experience in spatial modelling and/or agent-based modelling.
  • Academic record in terms of publications in relevant fields and high-impact journals.
  • Excellent skills in English.
  • Familiarity with recreational and commercial fishing and the Danish language is highly valued.

Salary and terms of employment

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.

A certain amount of travelling each year should be expected as international conferences and collaboration are integral parts of the job. Furthermore, attendance of relevant courses (in e.g. statistics) is encouraged.
