Context and position
We are looking for a graphic designer to develop visual communication projects for a range of media, including digital, print, and exhibitions, for Medical Museion and the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research (CBMR). The graphic designer will work both independently, and in collaboration with external consultants.

Medical Museion (www.museion.ku.dk) is the medical museum of the University of Copenhagen and an interdisciplinary research group, working together to engage diverse audiences in health and medical sciences in their cultural, historical, and philosophical context.

CBMR (www.cbmr.ku.dk) is an international research center conducting interdisciplinary research into fundamental metabolic processes, funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation. The Center’s Program for Metabolic Science in Culture is an integral part of Medical Museion, producing exhibitions, events, online communication, research and teaching that aims to push the boundaries of how we can engage people in metabolic science and the profound human experiences it invokes.

This role will be part of an expanded communications team, including staff working in exhibition production, digital and AV communication, marketing, events planning, and science communication. The graphic designer will produce smaller projects and act as a design liaison between the museum and external design companies on larger communication and exhibition projects. The team combines daily maintenance of a communication environment with creative thinking about future strategy and experimental projects.

Work tasks

Museum graphics: Produce smaller graphic projects for museum communication and marketing including postcards, maps, adverts etc.; for both print and digital platforms.

Exhibition graphics: Work on graphics for smaller exhibits and events at the museum and contribute to exhibition design, liaising with external designers for larger scale projects.

Scientific graphics: Produce smaller graphic projects relating to CBMR conferences, posters, grant applications, and figures for papers.

Visual identity and branding: Collaborate with the team developing future Medical Museion[HBS1] branding and marketing re visual identity. Participate in related discussions at CBMR re branding and identity, within the KU framework.

Developing innovative graphic communication projects, including:

  • Investigate strategies for graphically representing processes, both in both metabolic research and exhibition projects, and develop new examples in collaboration with ongoing projects at Medical Museion and CBMR.
  • Bring CBMR scientists together with designers, artists, and communication specialists people to investigate how the metabolic body can be represented. Produce both critical discussion and a useable toolbox of images for future communications and website.
  • Develop a project looking at the visual representation of Big Data, bringing artists and graphic designers to meet around a shared data set and working toward an exhibition.
  • Test formats for graphic ‘note-taking’ for exhibition development processes.


Qualifications
We expect that you have an excellent visual sense and an analytic approach to design problems, as well as a high level of technical skill. Your educational background could be from many different disciplinary sectors, but some demonstrable interest in both health and medical sciences, and public or artistic institutions, would be a bonus – this might come from your education, work experience, or hobbies.

In addition, we are looking for somebody with:
  • Experience producing small graphic projects from start to finish, ideally in either an exhibition/museum or a scientific context
  • Ability to manage design processes: Developing briefs, producing drafts and integrating input, liaising with production process, evaluating tests, and working with user teams
  • Experience with graphic communication of complex topics, data, information, or science would be a bonus, and an interest in the roles that graphics play both in science and exhibition contexts.
  • Ability to work both on quick projects, and delve into more research-based or experimental tasks
  • Excellent collaboration and listening skills, able to synthesize different inputs and interests
  • Fluent Danish and English are required
Place of employment
The place of employment is at Medical Museion, Fredericiagade 18, 1310 Copenhagen, and the role is fully affiliated with the CBMR Program for Metabolic Science in Culture. We offer creative and stimulating working conditions in a dynamic and international museum and research environment.

Terms of salary and employment
The employment as “Graphic Designer“(AC-TAP AS) is a full time, 3 years position. Starting date is September 1st. 2019. Employment will be in accordance with the provisions of the collective agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations). The monthly salary will be based on the number of years of work experience (seniority) with the possibility to negotiate a salary supplement based on prior experiences and qualifications.
