The Department of Physics and Astronomy (www.phys.au.dk) invites applications for the position of permanent full professor, or permanent associate professor, in experimental physics. The position is open from July 1st, 2019.

The Department seeks to complement and/or strengthen its existing experimental activities in surface and solid-state science, laboratory astrophysics, nuclear and atomic physics at CERN as well as laser-based investigations of BEC’s, ion trapping, biomolecules and optomechanics.

The working culture at the Department is characterized by a collaborative and supportive atmosphere, where we help each other and have a good collegial community.

The successful candidate is expected to conduct an ambitious research program, be a team player and to contribute to the development of the research fields within the Department. The Department offers ample laboratory space and access to mechanical and electronics workshops with expertly qualified staff. Clean-room facilities are accessible in the neighbouring Interdisciplinary Nanoscience Center.

Applicants must have a strong record of original scientific research at a high international level and must document energetic and team-oriented leadership, talent for supervision of young researchers and document their experience with all facets of university teaching, including the supervision of MSc and PhD students. Abilities to promote collaborative research and to attract variety of sources of funding are additional important qualifications for the position.

The position is advertised at the level of permanent full professor, but talented academics earlier in their career may ask to be considered for the position as permanent associate professor.

The position is available from July 1st 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Job description
Your tasks include:

  • high quality teaching at both undergraduate and graduate levels, including existing courses and development of new courses
  • The successful candidate must accept to learn Danish within a time-span of 3 years, to be able to teach at the undergraduate level in Danish
  • lead your own strong and competitive research program within the field of experimental physics as well as contributing to joint research in collaboration with colleagues at the institute
  • research leadership and ability to define and manage research projects.
  • conduct competitive and innovative research activities at the highest international level
  • attract external funding from national and international funding bodies and create a vision on how to further develop this activity together with your network
  • participate in advisory work for the national authorities if needed
  • participate in the administration and development of the department
  • strengthen national and international cooperation within the research area
  • develop and enhance interdisciplinary collaboration within the Department, and between the Department and relevant national and international research communities
  • establish synergies between your own research and other related research activities to secure the needed interdisciplinary approaches
  • participation in international and national networks of researchers as well as international project applications/maintain a strong national and international network of contacts with leading research groups, as well as pursuing industrial contacts if relevant
  • be open for for effective knowledge exchange with society, utility companies, and industry
  • mentor junior researchers in for example attracting competitive funding, career development etc.
  • participate in supervision of Bachelor, Master’s, and PhD students

Your profile
In order to be able to fulfill the tasks above, it is compulsory that you:
  • hold a PhD in experimental physics or a related cross-disciplinary field
  • have documented research qualifications at professorship/associate professorship level
  • experience in communication of research in a wide context e.g. write and speak English fluently
  • have strong evidence of nationally or internationally recognized leadership in their field

It is also relevant for us that you have:
  • an established record of substantial external funding
  • demonstrated ability to deliver high quality teaching/supervision
  • numerous publications in high quality journals
  • experience with advisory activities, depending on seniority
  • demonstrated the ability to conduct basic and possibly applied interdisciplinary research, and experience within the field of experimental physics

Personal qualifications in order to be able to fulfill the tasks above
  • the ability to work closely with other researchers/groups within the Department as well as with external stakeholders.
  • ability to collaborate and build relationships.

Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the assessment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. The selection is made on the basis of an assessment of who of the candidates are most relevant considering the requirements of the advertisement. Salary depends on seniority as agreed between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Confederation of Professional Associations.
