The activities in CoaST cover coating technologies from raw materials, over formulation, test and characterization to production and application. In the broad perspective, the center will support development, production and use of high performance coatings with improved sustainability profiles over the lifetime of the coating. Areas of research are anticorrosive coatings for steel structures, blade coatings for wind turbines, intumescent coatings for passive fire protection, antifouling coatings for ships, insulation coatings for heat loss reduction, coatings for the cement- and mineral industries, and coatings for oil- and gas pipelines at high temperature and high pressure.

Responsibilities and tasks

In the heavy duty industry, such as the oil and gas sector, organic coatings for conditions of high pressure (up to 200 bars) and high temperature (up to 200 celcius), as well as seawater exposure, are needed to protect process equipment. Coating types used are based on two-component epoxy binders. Estimation of the coating lifetime and mapping of the degradation pathways under various process conditions is a challenge and the main content of this project.

During the past few years, a new pilot plant (batch reactor), allowing for experimentation at high pressure and high temperature, has been designed and built. Initial results have shown that coatings degrade at different rates, but the mechanisms behind the coating degradation have not been mapped and quantified and may include one of more of the following rate phenomena: diffusion and dissolution of gases (N2, CH4, O2/air, CO2, and H2S) and solvents (e.g xylene) in the coating, chemical degradation of the binder and other coating ingredients, coating swelling, and formation of cracks and blisters.

The purpose of the project is to quantify the degradation mechanisms for selected coatings and various gas/liquid mixtures and to find ways of extending the coating life time.

Qualifications

Candidates should have a PhD degree or equivalent in chemical engineering or materials.

Salary and appointment terms

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 2 years. The expected start date is 15 April 2019.
