The Digital Design Department at the IT University of Copenhagen invites candidates for an Assistant Professorship in the areas of Digital Media, User Cultures and User Engagement. The proposed starting date is 1 August 2019 or soon thereafter.

Job Description
The candidate should have a background in the Humanities, Psychology, Cultural Sociology, Philosophy or similar areas with strong theoretical, analytical and methodological qualifications regarding research into the socio-cultural aspects of the use of digital media. To be considered, candidates should be able to demonstrate research and teaching qualifications in one or more of the following areas:

  • Theories and methods related to the understanding of digital media use and users, including both quantitative and qualitative methods, preferably including knowledge of data-driven user analysis and cross-platform studies
  • Cultural theory and cultural studies, as applied to digital media formats and digital media uses
  • The interplay between digital service- and platform design, sociality and user behavior
  • The affective and emotional aspects of our everyday use of digital media in relation to social, cultural and institutional contexts
At the Digital Design Department, we have a broad understanding of digital media. In the context of this position, we understand digital media as social media services, computer games and mobile apps which facilitate communicative and social practices. We are looking for a candidate who has worked within at least one of these areas. A good candidate is generally interested in understanding what engages users in digital social interaction, and is continuously motivated to explore and map emerging trends in digital media uses and the impact this use may have on society at large.

Applicants should provide a research plan explaining the research they wish to pursue in the position as Assistant Professor. Applicants should also be able to carry out research-based teaching and supervision in a variety of subjects related to digital media, the interplay between media formats, (re)design and user practices, and context-based user studies in on- and offline environments, on both bachelor and master level.

The ideal candidate should document:
  • Publications of research at a high international level in well-respected peer-reviewed venues
  • Competences in developing and conducting teaching that is well received by students
  • A record of contributing to the goals of institutions in which he/she has worked, for instance participation in committees or boards.
In addition, candidates for the position should be able to:
  • Participate in and co-develop applications for external research funding
  • Read/speak a Scandinavian language (or have the willingness to learn Danish)
General information
The IT University of Copenhagen (ITU) is a teaching and research-based tertiary institution concerned with information technology (IT) and the opportunities it offers. The IT University has more than 160 full-time academics. Research and teaching in information technology span all academic activities which involve computers including computer science, information and media sciences, humanities and social sciences, business impact and the commercialisation of IT.

The assistant professorship is a temporary position for up to 4 years with the possibility of extension. The position requires academic qualifications at PhD level.

Appointment and salary will be in accordance with the Ministry of Finance’s agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC).

The applicant will be assessed according to the Appointment Order from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation of 25 April 2008.
