Postdoc in Stochastic modelling and data analyses of weather based generation



The Department of Wind Energy in the Technical University of Denmark (DTU Wind Energy) is seeking a Postdoc in Modelling and analyses of weather based generation for the Integration and Planning Section (INP). You will be part of a highly international team carrying out research in wind power integration and control, where the working language is English.

Our research in INP is function oriented in the sense that we direct the research towards issues that are relevant for industrial development and applications, and we work in projects with system integration, control concepts for wind turbines, wind / hybrid power plants, electrical components, grid connection and large-scale wind energy power systems.

The research field 'modelling and analyses of weather based generation' consists of the following tasks / areas:

  • Stochastic modelling of temporal and spatial variability of weather based wind and solar generation
  • Modelling of uncertainties caused by forecast errors of weather based wind and solar generation
  • Analysis of measured and simulated data
  • Validation of models for variability and uncertainties

Responsibilities and tasks
The purpose of the position is to strengthen ongoing research in modelling and analyzing of the variability and uncertainty of weather based generation with main focus on wind and solar power.

For this postdoc position, you will undertake the following responsibilities and tasks:
  • Contribute to further development and validation of our models for temporal and spatial variability in wind and solar power
  • Contribute to further development and validation of our models for uncertainties caused by forecast errors of wind and solar power
  • Maintain and develop models implemented in C#, Matlab and Python.
  • You will be responsible for writing academic papers to conferences and journals
  • Contribute to education and training in the area of weather based generation

You will be part of the team in the section for Integration and Planning (INP) working with weather based generation in power systems. This work is done in close collaboration with the section on resource assessment (RAM) who have background in meteorology.

We collaborate with other research groups and end users in public funded projects as well as commissioned research in the area of weather based generation. Initially, you will mainly work in the Danish R&D project OffshoreWake, where we will include large-scale wake effects between offshore wind farms in our models for simulation of wind power variability.

Collaboration with grid operators and energy systems planners / advisors also plays a strong role for this research area. For instance, we have a long-term collaboration with European grid operators in ENTSO-E delivering data for wind and solar power used by ENTSO-E for planning of the development of the European transmission grid.

Candidates should have a PhD degree or equivalent in computer science or power systems engineering. Furthermore, we seek a candidate with the following qualifications:
  • Documented in-depth knowledge in statistical modelling including stochastic time series analysis
  • Documented experience with probabilistic analysis in time domain as well as frequency domain
  • Proven programming skills in Python, C# and Matlab or similar programming languages

The following qualifications are not mandatory but will be an advantage:
  • Understanding of power systems
  • Understanding of wind and solar power
  • Knowledge of JavaScript, SQL databases and/or HTML

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.

The initial contract is for 2 years with possibility for 1 year extension.
