The Department of Agroecology at Aarhus University is looking for a dedicated and responsible postdoctoral researcher within soil physics and hydropedology. The position is available from April 1, 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter and will be available for 2 years with a possible extension of 2 years.

In many countries, the agricultural sector is challenged in terms of compliance with the EU habitat- and water directives, which indicate the need for spatial differentiation of land use in vulnerable areas. There is thus significant economic, societal and environmental potential in agricultural diversification through developing provenance foods, which embeds geographical characteristics of place of production. Some of these issues are addressed in the Innovation Foundation Denmark funded project PROVENANCE. The candidate will perform physiographic mapping of Denmark using Digital Soil Mapping techniques.

The candidates must be able to work cross-disciplinarily in teams of collaborating researchers and highly professional technical staff across the department. The new staff members are expected to contribute to research and teaching, and to providing research-based policy advice and consultancy to authorities.

Specific qualification and competences
The qualified candidates are specialized in Digital Soil Mapping. The candidates must have experience and high skills with GIS and the use of machine learning algorithms to predict soil properties in geographic space. Experience with regional and/or national soil datasets, remote sensing products and terrain-derived variables is preferable.

General qualifications

The successful candidates must hold relevant academic qualifications and a proven record of scientific achievements at international level within the relevant research areas.

The Department of Agroecology
Department of Agroecology study interactions between soil, plants, animals, humans and the environment in different agroecosystems producing food, feed, biomaterials and energy. The department contribute to fundamental knowledge generation as well as the attainment of sustainable production systems via state of the art research, contracted policy advice, and education. We offer state-of-the-art soil physics and chemistry labs, access to well-established study catchments and long-term monitoring programmes as well as an extensive national and international researcher network. Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the appointment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. Salary depends on seniority as agreed between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Confederation of Professional Associations.
