PhD Position in Freshwater Ecology

Syddansk Universitet

A three-year PhD scholarship is open in the Ecology group at Department of Biology, University of Southern Denmark. The project will investigate environmental responses in streams and lakes after climate adaptation initiatives in urban and rural catchments.

Most streams and lakes receive runoff from various sources and catchment types. There is widespread focus on reducing environmental effects in e.g. streams through actions in the catchments, including climate change adaptation. However, knowledge is lacking on the integrated environmental impact of all these initiatives. Discharge of N and P nutrients are reduced by e.g. establishment of constructed wetlands, wastewater treatment for isolated houses, agricultural regulations, buffer zones and management practice for streams. Climate adaptation strategies include the establishment of newer and larger sewer systems, sustainable drainage methods and technologies to handle the discharged water.

Highly valued qualifications for the successful candidate are:
1) knowledge on freshwater ecology,
2) a master degree in Biology or Environmental Technology,
3) experience with field work, laboratory work and analyzes of freshwater samples,
4) experience with GIS for data evaluation,
5) drivers license,
6) experience and/or interest in cooperating with external partners,
7) excellent communication skills in English (written and oral), and
8) a high level of responsibility and self-motivation.

The employment starts on 1 March 2019 or soon thereafter.

Deadline: 18 February 2019.
