The School of Culture and Society invites applications for an associate professorship in theoretical philosophy.

The associate professorship is a permanent, full-time position, commencing on 1 August 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The position is located at the Department of Philosophy and History of Ideas, Jens Chr. Skous Vej 3-7, 8000 Aarhus C, Denmark.

The position
We are looking for an innovative and dedicated candidate with a focus on Aarhus University’s core activities in the areas of research, education, talent development and knowledge exchange. The associate professor will be expected to develop and strengthen the department’s profile in analytical theoretical philosophy. The successful applicant must be able to teach a range of core courses on the philosophy programme at both BA and MA level.

Research
The successful applicant will be expected to develop and to participate in research projects in one or more core areas of analytical theoretical philosophy, such as epistemology, metaphysics, philosophical logic, the philosophy of science, the philosophy of mind, or the philosophy of language. The successful applicant must also demonstrate competences in using formal methodology in philosophical research.

The School of Culture and Society places emphasis on research of a high international standard, including interdisciplinary collaboration, participation in collective research projects and the attraction of external research funding.

Education
The associate professor will be expected to teach several modules or core courses in analytical theoretical philosophy at BA level, including critical thinking, formal logic, epistemology, the philosophy of science, the philosophy of mathematics, philosophical logic, and metaphysics; as well as advanced courses on our MA track ‘Epistemology, Metaphysics and Philosophy of Cognition’. The associate professor will be expected to contribute substantially to the interdisciplinary profile of the philosophy programme at the Department of Philosophy and History of Ideas.

Talent development
The associate professor will be expected to supervise PhD students and contribute to the development and implementation of PhD courses in the field of philosophy and related fields.

Knowledge exchange
It is expected that the successful applicant will engage in knowledge exchange as described in the strategy for the Faculty of Arts, for instance in research cooperation with private companies, government consultancy, cooperation with civil society partners or public dissemination of knowledge. Applicants should document any prior experience within the field of knowledge exchange.

Qualifications
Applicants must have a PhD degree in philosophy or equivalent qualifications at an international level, and must document qualifications corresponding to the completion of an assistant professorship.

Applicants must moreover be able to document:

  • An established research and publication record in the areas of philosophical logic (in particular concerning modal logic), epistemology (in particular formal epistemology), and the philosophy of robotics
  • Competence in using formal methodology in philosophical research
  • The ability to teach modules in several of our core courses in analytical theoretical philosophy at BA level, including critical thinking, formal logic, epistemology, the philosophy of science and technology, philosophical logic and metaphysics
  • The ability to teach and supervise at MA level in theoretical analytical philosophy
  • Participation in national and international research networks
  • Experience of attracting external funding
  • Experience of interdisciplinary cooperation.

If the successful applicant is not fluent in Danish, he or she will be expected to learn Danish within a period of approximately two years.
