DTU Mechanical Engineering at Technical University of Denmark invites applications for a position as Professor in Machine Dynamics. The professor will be affiliated to the Section for Solid Mechanics.

The Section for Solid Mechanics conducts research and teaching at the highest international level within the fields of structural mechanics and materials mechanics, vibrations and their active control, as well as machine elements and design optimization. The section has a scientific staff of about 30 and 25 PhD students. The research rests on theoretical, numerical, and experimental investigations of phenomena that are most often highly interdisciplinary and span many length and time scales.

The professor's research must span broadly within the field of non-linear machine dynamics and active control, including frontier-active controllable bearings such as magnetic and mechanical bearings. Important areas also include the application of smart materials such as piezoelectric materials and shape memory alloys. Furthermore, the professor must strengthen efforts within the Department in cyber-physical systems relevant to our efforts within Industry 4.0.

Responsibilities and tasks

The professor will have a leading role within the Department's research and innovation in Machine Elements with a special focus on Machine Dynamics. The research is highly interdisciplinary and must span both theoretical, numerical, and experimental investigations.

It is the goal that the professor will strengthen research and innovation efforts within the research field at the Department by generating new research projects that involve other faculty members within the research group. Research activities are also expected to be conducted in cooperation with relevant groups at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, and more broadly at DTU as well as abroad. Hence, the successful candidate must demonstrate a proven track record of participating in interdisciplinary research activities, and of attracting and managing research projects.

The professor is expected to be highly dedicated to education. The successful candidate must have a proven ability to teach and advise students. Furthermore, the candidate must be willing to participate in teaching in the courses of the Section for Solid Mechanics at the BEng, BSc, MSc, and PhD levels.

The successful candidate is expected to have strong international collaborations with leading research groups in the research field. Furthermore, the professor is expected to develop strong ties to relevant industrial partners in order to foster innovations within the field of research.

For international candidates, DTU can provide Danish language courses enabling the candidates to teach in Danish within 2-3 years.

Qualifications

The professor must be an internationally acknowledged expert in the research field of Machine Dynamics, and have significant teaching experience at all university levels from the BSc to PhD level. The successful candidate must be an experienced, self-driven scientist with a keen eye for new developments in the general field of Machine Elements.

The professor must have a proven track record within several of the following research fields:

  • Multiphysics modelling.
  • Electro-mechanical machine elements.
  • Active control of dynamic machinery.
  • Hydraulic, piezoelectric, and magnetic actuators.
  • Experimental testing within the field of machine elements.

Candidates for the professorship must demonstrate remarkable achievements in terms of
  • A high international level of research production which has contributed to the advancement of the research field.
  • Documented and successful teaching at all university levels.
  • A proven track record in attracting and managing research projects.

Furthermore, the candidate must be
  • highly self-motivated,
  • ready to take on new and challenging tasks,
  • dedicated to develop talent, and
  • motivated to contribute to a dynamic environment where research and education at the highest international level are cornerstones.

Assessment

In the assessment of the candidates, consideration will be given to
  • Documented experience and quality of teaching and curriculum development
  • Research impact and experience, funding track record and research vision
  • Societal impact
  • Documented innovation activities, including commercialization and collaboration with industry
  • International impact and experience
  • Leadership and collaboration
  • Communication skills
